Convert WebP to SVG.

WebP is what a browser often hands you when you save an image from a web page: a sticker, an icon, a product graphic. Drop it on this page and pic2svg traces it into filled vector paths you can preview straight away. Below: a real trace of a test sticker saved as lossy and as lossless WebP, what happens to its transparency, and how to get fewer shapes.

How do you convert WebP to SVG?

Drop the .webp file on this page, or copy the image and paste it. Your browser decodes it, paints any transparency white, scales it to fit about 600,000 pixels and uploads it, as a lossless PNG for flat artwork or a JPEG for photos and noisy images; the engine then traces that image into filled vector paths. Tracing, preview and the SVG download are free and need no account; PDF, EPS, AI and DXF depend on the plan. Expect a white background shape under the artwork.

Applies to images you add next — each one traces as it lands.

The SVG download is free — no account needed.

Transparent areas become white shapes, and larger images are scaled down to about 0.6 megapixels before tracing.

Your image is uploaded to pic2svg's own server to be traced. What we keep, and for how long

Other formats, plans and licences

PDF, EPS, AI (EPS-based) and DXF come with a paid plan, and every new account gets 7 days of Pro free. The free plan and Starter carry a personal-use licence; commercial use needs Pro, and resale needs Advanced — see the licence row on the pricing page.

What does a traced WebP look like?

A test sticker drawn for this page — a yellow face with two eyes and a smile inside a white die-cut border, on a transparent 500 × 500 canvas — saved as WebP two ways. Each was prepared the way this website uploads it (flattened onto white, then sent as a lossless PNG or a quality-85 JPEG, whichever the browser picks; simulated with Pillow rather than a browser) and traced on 2026-10-22 on the default Balanced preset with automatic mode detection. Sizes and path counts are read from the files.

A lossy WebP (quality 80), as this website uploads it

Input
The test sticker as a lossy WebP: a yellow smiling face with two dark eyes inside a white circular border, on a transparent background
Traced SVG
The SVG traced from the lossy WebP's upload: the same face on a white square, rebuilt from 5 filled paths
Input: WEBP, 500 × 500 px, 11.0 KBOutput: SVG, 3.2 KB, 5 paths, spline mode, Balanced presetThe WebP itself counts 114 quantised colours, far past the 48-colour limit for flat art. Its compression noise makes a PNG of it nearly six times the size of a JPEG, so the browser sends the JPEG, which leaves 111 colours and puts the engine in spline mode. The engine still recognises flat artwork and snaps it to its own colours: 5 paths in 3 fills. The first path is a full-canvas #FFFFFF background. Once the transparency is painted white, the white border and the background are the same colour, so the border has no edge left to trace.

The same sticker as a lossless WebP, as this website uploads it

Input
The same test sticker saved as a lossless WebP
Traced SVG
The SVG traced from the lossless WebP's upload: the same face, rebuilt from 5 filled paths
Input: WEBP, 500 × 500 px, 16.0 KBOutput: SVG, 1.6 KB, 5 paths, polygon mode, Balanced presetLossless, the WebP has only 45 quantised colours and a PNG of it is small, so the browser sends it as a lossless PNG. The engine traced it in polygon mode: 5 paths, a full-canvas white background, the face, the two eyes and the smile. For flat artwork like this, the lossy and the lossless file give the same 5 shapes.

How do you turn a WebP into a vector file here?

Four steps on this page. The engine traces exactly the pixels it receives, so the copy you start from matters most.

  1. Step 1

Save the largest copy you can find

Many sites serve a smaller WebP to phones than to desktops, so save the image from a desktop browser at its full size. The engine never upscales: a 200-pixel icon is traced at 200 pixels.

  2. Step 2

    Drop or paste the WebP

Drag the .webp onto the converter, or copy the image in your browser and paste it with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). An animated WebP is drawn onto a canvas once, so a single frame is traced.

  3. Step 3

Pick a preset and check the preview

Balanced is the default. Compact merges near-identical colours: on the sticker it gave the same 5 paths. Look along curved edges and inside flat areas for slivers and speckles before you download.

  4. Step 4

    Download the format you need

The SVG download is free and needs no account. PDF needs Starter ($9.99 billed monthly, or $79 billed yearly, which is $6.58 a month); EPS, AI and DXF need Pro ($19.99 billed monthly, or $159 billed yearly, which is $13.25 a month) or Advanced. Without a plan and on Starter the licence covers personal, non-commercial use only; Pro and Advanced cover commercial use. Compare the plans on the pricing page.

What happens to a WebP on the way in?

WebP can carry transparency, animation and very large canvases. This is what each becomes, read from the converter's upload code and measured on the sticker above.

  • Transparency becomes white

The browser paints the canvas white under the image before uploading it, so see-through areas come back as a white shape. Delete that full-size white shape in a vector editor to get a transparent background again.

  • Animation becomes one frame

An animated WebP is drawn onto a canvas once, so only one frame is traced and the SVG is a still image.

  • Large images are scaled down first

Anything over about 600,000 pixels is scaled down in your browser before upload: a 1200 × 800 image (960,000 pixels) goes up at roughly 949 × 632. A smaller image is never scaled up.

  • The SVG's size follows its shapes

Traced artwork is written as path data, so the SVG's size depends on how many shapes it has, not on the WebP's: the sticker's 5 shapes took 1.6 KB from the lossless file and 3.2 KB from the lossy one, smaller than either WebP. The SVG's advantage is that it scales without blurring and every shape is editable.

  • Lettering is traced as shapes

There is no text recognition. Words in the image become outlined shapes, so you cannot retype them or change the font.

WebP to SVG questions

Is converting WebP to SVG free?
Yes, as an SVG: tracing, preview and the SVG download are free and need no account. PDF needs Starter ($9.99 billed monthly, or $79 billed yearly, which is $6.58 a month) or higher, and EPS, AI and DXF need Pro or Advanced. Using the file commercially also needs Pro or Advanced.
Does the SVG keep my WebP's transparent background?
No. Transparency is flattened onto white before tracing, and the SVG gets a white background shape; delete that shape in Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma to make the background see-through again. PNG to SVG covers the same behaviour for transparent PNGs.
Should I convert my WebP to PNG or JPG before tracing it?
No. Your browser decides from the pixels, not the file type: clean flat artwork goes up as a lossless PNG and noisy images as a JPEG, so converting a lossy WebP to PNG keeps its compression noise. For flat artwork like the sticker above it barely matters: both WebPs traced to 5 paths. Start from the largest, least-compressed copy you have.
Why does my three-colour sticker have hundreds of paths?
Usually because the image is not flat enough for the engine to snap it to its own colours: gradients, shadows, texture or heavy compression add in-between colours, and the tracer keeps them as small shapes. The test sticker above, lossy or lossless, came back as 5 paths. Try the Compact preset, and delete stray shapes in a vector editor. For a cutting machine, see image to SVG for Cricut.
Can I turn an animated WebP into an animated SVG?
No. One frame is traced, and the result is a still SVG. Export the frame you want as its own image first if it is not the one the browser shows.
Is the result a real vector or a WebP inside an SVG?
A real vector: filled <path> elements with no embedded <image>. Our guide on how to check if an SVG is a real vector shows how to tell for any file.
