A Vector Magic alternative, compared honestly.

Vector Magic has been vectorizing bitmaps for years, online and as a desktop app, and it charges to download. pic2svg uploads your image to its own server for tracing, then lets you preview and download the SVG free in your browser. Here is what each one does, with the source and date behind every claim about Vector Magic, and when it is the better pick. The converter on this page is ours.

Is pic2svg a good Vector Magic alternative?

For a free SVG, yes: pic2svg's tracing, preview and SVG download cost nothing and need no account, while Vector Magic lets you upload and preview free and charges to download. Vector Magic's desktop edition does things we do not — it runs offline, keeps transparency and lets you set the tracing options yourself — so if you need those, it is the better tool. We have not measured Vector Magic's output, so compare both previews on your own image.

The SVG download is free — no account needed.

Transparent areas become white shapes, and larger images are scaled down to about 0.6 megapixels before tracing.

When is Vector Magic the better choice?

These are the cases where its published capabilities go further than ours.

  • Your artwork cannot leave your computer

Vector Magic's desktop edition runs on your own machine. pic2svg uploads every image to its server and has no offline build; for local tools we have measured, see the offline converter benchmark.

  • You need a transparent background

Its desktop edition lists transparency support. pic2svg paints transparent areas white before tracing, and the SVG has a white background shape you have to delete.

  • You want to tune the trace by hand

Vector Magic lets you turn off automatic mode and choose the settings. pic2svg offers two presets, Balanced and Compact, and nothing finer.

  • You prefer to pay once

The desktop edition is a one-time licence; pic2svg's paid formats are a monthly or yearly plan.

When is pic2svg the better choice?

Where our published terms and engine behaviour suit the job better.

  • You only need an SVG

The SVG download is free and needs no account; you pay only for PDF, EPS, AI and DXF. See the pricing page.

  • AI and DXF without a desktop licence

Vector Magic lists AI and DXF for its desktop edition; pic2svg exports both from the browser on Pro or Advanced. For CAD and cutting, see image to DXF.

  • WebP and TIFF files

Vector Magic officially supports JPG, PNG, BMP and GIF. pic2svg takes WebP like any image your browser opens, and reads TIFF on the server; see TIFF to SVG.
